IF P.T. BARNUM WERE ALIVE TODAY...
IF P.T. BARNUM WERE ALIVE TODAY...
...HE WOULD PROBABLY BE A NETWORK MARKETING TRAINER!
“A reliable way to make people believe in falsehoods is frequent repetition, because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth. Authoritarian institutions and marketers have always known this fact.”
Daniel Kahneman
I guess I prefer to be knowledgeable rather than manipulative. This type of attitude in my business approach has probably cost me a great deal over the years but that is just the way I'm hardwired.
Being an honest marketer with integrity is becoming more difficult because of the truth contained in the opening quote. When I started my business over 26 years ago there was no such idiom as
"well I read it on the internet, so it must be true"
For me network marketing is about the power of building a lasting partnership with whom you are able to speak the truth. I may not be the best marketer in the world, but I think it's because I really don't want to be.
If you don't know who PT Barnum was, he was most famous for saying,
"there's a sucker born every minute"
and he was a master marketer. The reason I think he would be a network marketing trainer now is because network marketing has the highest concentration of suckers of any business model.
The stats don't lie, because the failure rate in this industry is off the charts staggering.
99.7% of people in this industry fail to turn a PROFIT.
That is not the same as making commissions. If a business does not generate more capital than it invests then it is a failure.
Why? Well there are many reasons... too many to elaborate upon here. Unless you really want to master this type of career it would probably bore you anyway. I don't find many deep issue critical thinkers in this industry.
Successful MLM trainers understand this principle and use it to their advantage to exploit a lot of decent people with a dream to build a solid business. They (the so-called Gurus) do this even when they know, for most, their student's opportunity is doomed to fail. They are just fleecing the stupid suckers who are desperate to make even a part time income.
That's why they don't practice what they teach and build their own downline, because there is no money in it and they know it. Much of what they teach is self help and personal growth content they are regurgitating with little variation from other speakers and authors. There is so much free training and personal growth information available now that the ONLY way these con artists stay in business is to assert they know things nobody else does. They do not and what they know to be true they won't tell you because it would poison the well and they would have to find another one.
That is manipulation and dishonest. I know this to be the case but most have their loyal following of failing MLMers. The average decent person does not want to manipulate or trick their personal social and business connections to pitch them on a pyramid scheme. That is the real reason this industry is declining in North America.
Here's a nickels worth of free advice:
Evaluate your current business on 3 objective criteria before you tell someone you have a once in a lifetime opportunity, these all contribute to one magic attribute: CUSTOMER RETENTION the only relevant indicator of residual income.
- 1. Cost/Value -Will non distributor customers buy it consistently at the price set? Has it created consumer loyalty or is it an untested theory?
- 2. Uniqueness (market share)- can it dominate a category so you don't lose your customer base, or is it easily replicated?
- 3.Timing- Is it a growth industry or one that is already full of other players. Are there too many voices competing for attention requiring you having to compare yours with everybody else's?
After you have determined that your business is viable from a product standpoint, then you can start to look at other factors, (Compensation, Leadership, Company Culture, Training and Business Tools) because customers don't care about any of them, they just want to know they will get their stuff.
If you are emotionally attached to anything that does not make sense from a real world business philosophy of supply and demand you will continue to struggle unless you become an expert at manipulation and duplicating those practices with your team.
I'm currently building a group in a company with a technology that meets those 3 criteria. I'm not just blowing smoke.
